Three people stand side by side posing for a photo in front of a blue backdrop branded with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project logo. An American flag stands to the left. The person in the center holds a stack of documents or folders, while the two people beside them smile toward the camera. The setting appears to be an official Veterans History Project event or presentation space at the Library of Congress.

25 years. Over 121,000 stories. One national legacy.
The Veterans History Project (VHP) preserves the firsthand stories of U.S. veterans who served in uniform and shaped our nation’s history.

Created by Congress in 2000, this growing archive ensures that future generations hear directly from those who lived through war, conflict and military service.

The project includes more than 121,000 collections thanks to volunteers, families and community members across the country. You can help carry it forward, one story at a time. Here’s how to get started:

1. Read the submission guidelines

Visit loc.gov/vets/scope.html to confirm who and what can be included.

2. Download the field kit

The kit includes interview questions, required forms and step-by-step instructions. It is available for download at loc.gov/vets/kitmenu.html.

3. Record an interview or gather materials

You may submit recorded interviews along with original photographs, letters, diaries or unpublished memoirs. Before accepting collections of manuscripts or photographs of over 50 items, the VHP Collection Committee must evaluate all materials. Contact VHP if you are interested in donating collections with over 50 items. Be aware that not all original materials are a good match for VHP.

4. Submit the collection

Mail materials via UPS or FedEx to:
